CONATUS : LA ROSE EST SANS POURQUOI (CONATUS: THE ROSE IS WITHOUT WHY)
2009

Solo show, FRAC Champagne-Ardenne

This exhibition takes as its starting point a short poem written by Johannes Scheffler, theologian and mystic poet of the German 17th century also known as Angelus Silesius: « The rose is without why, it blooms because it blooms, It pays no attention to itself, asks not whether it is seen. » A number of questions (such as autonomy, sovereignty and power of affirmation of the work, the nature of its relationship to the viewer, the concept of adaptation, of the display as landscape…) are taken from this quatrain and have fueled the conception of the works presented, but can also be taken as many points of entry to the exhibition. Besides the works, all designed and created specifically, a xeroxed fanzine was printed and distributed free. It contained some views of the exhibition and a text by art critic Bernard Marcadé, The Rose and the Mussel, he also wrote taking the Silesius’ poem as its starting point
