DES JEUX DONT J’IGNORE LES RÈGLES (GAMES WHOSE RULES I IGNORE)
2015

56th Venice Bienniale : All the World’s Futures
Curator : Okwui Enwezor

Each of the six Games whose rules I ignore, consists of a film and a sculpture that becomes a prop manipulated in the film. All these games, played in pairs, propose relationships of a sensitive, poetic, erotic or conceptual type through sculptural forms. Each game corresponds to a short film, approximately 4 to 6 minutes long, which fictionalizes, while documenting, the use of the game. Each film has its own plastic qualities, its aesthetics, its atmosphere, a particular type of editing and relationship to sound. In the world of film, the players are not manipulating works of art, but rather playing a game that is familiar to them. These films are therefore not recordings of performances but fictions about a game whose nature, goals and rules remain foreign to us. Each work consists of a sculpture and the film associated with it. During the Biennial, six sculptures and as many films were presented.
This project is complemented by a deck of cards designed by Maki Suzuki of the Abake collective. Inspired by the Tarot of Marseille, the pack comprises 80 cards for collecting or exchanging; their format is reminiscent of a business card and they are printed with letters or images from the games. They are used for spelling out the captions of the works and are distributed free, a few at a time, throughout the Biennale. This is both a continuation and a fragment of the work Games Whose Rules I Ignore, whose purpose and use remain indeterminate.
